Destructive protests prompt Saturday night curfew in downtown Eugene

After a peaceful protest in downtown Eugene turned unruly and destructive Friday night, the City of Eugene enacted a temporary nighttime curfew in downtown Saturday.

From 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday, the curfew will be in place in the area from High Street to Monroe Street and from 13th Avenue to 4th Avenue. Travel on public streets or in any public place in that area is prohibited on foot or by any mode of transportation.

According to officials, a violation can result in a fine up to $500, confinement in jail up to 100 days or both.

The curfew does not apply to people seeking emergency care, fleeing dangerous circumstances, sheltering in place, traveling to and from employment, or making commercial deliveries.
