Man shot by Eugene police charged with domestic violence strangulation, unlawful use of a weapon

The man Eugene police shot during an arrest last week has been charged with four felonies, including allegedly strangling a woman and threatening an officer with a knife.

Eugene police shot Muhsin Sharif on Nov. 30 in a Whiteaker neighborhood alley before he was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Sharif is accused of advancing on an officer with a knife during a confrontation before the shooting, court documents said.

On Friday, authorities charged Sharif with strangulation and fourth-degree assault, both charges constituting domestic violence. He also was charged with first-degree criminal mistreatment for injuring his child and for unlawful use of a weapon, regarding the knife.

Eugene police have said there is body-worn, vehicle and third-party security footage of the shooting but has not made it available to the public while Oregon State Police and the Lane County District Attorney’s Office investigate the officer’s use of deadly force.

Sharif’s attorney, Brian Michaels, said Sharif was arraigned on those charges from a hospital bed Friday afternoon. Sharif later was taken to the Lane County Jail, he said.

Local racial justice and police reform activists rallied for more transparency about the investigation last week in response to officers shooting Sharif, who is Black.
